The conference is aimed at exploring the interface between the teaching of English and employability skills in the context of Gujarat in India. English has long been seen as a tool of empowerment and equity, and within this globalised world, it is fast becoming a necessary tool to interact with people, transact views, and create a sense of community. This paper discusses how useful documentaries are in teaching college reading courses. Now that the ESL classroom has become not only multicultural but also multidimensional, it is imperative for language teachers to utilize technology so as to allow learners to use the target language in spoken and written discourse, to develop critical thinking skills in unconventional situations and to become motivated to ‘read beyond’ the classroom for a better understanding of the world around them.

The Science of Humanity: Tongues, Stones, and Bones is the theme of this years Anthropology Lecture Series hosted by Falvey. Lowell Gustafson, Ph.D., professor of political science and associate dean of social sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, will host the first lecture with his presentation, Speaking Up: The Origins of Language on Tue., Feb. 10, from 1:00 to 2:30 p.m. in the first floor lounge of Falvey.
Linguistics, or the study of language, is one of the main sub-fields of anthropology. It is also one of the most important things that define what it means to be human. Many languages are spoken around the world, and which language we speak, be it French, German, Chinese or Arabic, can often serve to divide us. However, the fact that we have language is common to virtually all human beings.
But what is language? When and how did it originate? How did it reach the highly sophisticated level it is at today such that it significantly distinguishes humanity? Why did human beings start to speak up in the first place? Dr. Gustafson will offer insights and answers into these questions.

Logsdon says, “Presenting before a group causes jitters for most of us. Students with learning disabilities are no exception. Regardless of your child’s specific type of learning disability, here are some tips to help her create and deliver a terrific presentation for school.
Get a copy of the scoring criteria from the teacher for the class presentation. Create an outline that includes your teacher’s requirements and use it to develop your program. If you are not clear on your teacher’s requirements, ask to speak with her. Ask for her opinion of your work as you develop your presentation. Use any suggestions she shares.If your class’s opinions will be used in grading, ask several of them what they would like to know about your topic. Try to address their comments and questions in your presentation“.

Away from ELT theories propounded by the western theorists, the paper aims at studying the scenario of English language teaching in Gujarat and India. While the paper emphasizes the need for English language, it addresses issues related to learner, learning, content and culture and searches for alternatives of culturally loaded English literature taught in Indian class-rooms by the name of English language learning.
In a multi-lingual country like India English can function as a link language among Indian regional languages and in this context English translations from Indian languages may become fruitful both academically and culturally. Teaching and learning of Indian literatures translated into English can provide new insights not only into English language, but also into Indian culture and Indian poetics.
